The Hook

PANEL 1Coral glows beneath the clear-water research boat. Dr. Bello holds a job card. DR. BELLO: "I need three reef zones mapped by sunset. Are you the crew Mizz Zee recommended?" JAY: "Bet. We are extremely map-shaped."
PANEL 2Rae reads the card. RAE: "Job title: Marine Biologist’s Assistant. Rules: life vests on, hands off coral, and follow the ROV cable." TRAY: "Plan first, panic later. I put it in the app."
PANEL 3A lunchbox-sized ROV blinks beside a screen. RAE: "An ROV is a robot submarine. We steer it here; its camera sees there; its pictures build a coral map." JAY: "So it is a robot fish with homework. That tracks."
PAGE 2
PANEL 4The ROV hums past fish and knobby coral; coloured squares land on the screen map. TRAY: "Camera clear. Depth steady. Coral zone one is mapped!" DR. BELLO: "That map tells us what parts of the reef need care."
PANEL 5BIG VISUAL GAG: Glitch spots Jay’s sandwich crumb and whisks the whole sandwich into a sample box; Jay lunges in his life vest while Bolt barks at the rude-looking box. JAY: "My lunch has been promoted to science!" TRAY: "That is not a promotion. That is lunch-cident."
PAGE 3
PANEL 6The ROV spins, filming only its own cable. RAE: "Uh-oh. The cable is looping around the reel. Our map is becoming a cinnamon bun." JAY: "Low-key delicious-looking, no cap."
PANEL 7Rae clips a new waterproof tether reel beside every earlier tool, from her wrench to the scanner wand. RAE: "New tool, old problem: this reel winds the ROV cable evenly. Hold my juice box."
PANEL 8BIG VISUAL GAG: Jay wears the empty tether spool like a giant bracelet and waddles sideways when it rolls up his arm; Tray calmly draws arrows on a clipboard. JAY: "I am now fifty percent robot noodle." TRAY: "Please be less noodle near the buttons."
PAGE 4
PANEL 9Rae guides the cable; Tray calls depths. The ROV records a pale patch and a purple patch. RAE: "Working! It is mapping colour and shape, not eating sandwiches." DR. BELLO: "Big-brain teamwork. We found the spot that needs a shade canopy."
PANEL 10BIG VISUAL GAG: The recovered sandwich wears a label, “SOGGY BUT BRAVE,” as Jay salutes. At the dock, Dr. Bello pays the crew; Tray writes in the Crew Bank ledger. DR. BELLO: "Twenty-four dollars for a careful map and one very patient lunch rescue." RAE: "Pay us properly—done." TRAY: "New total: two hundred twenty dollars." JAY: "Next job better have bees. I owe a sandwich an apology."

Tech Talk with Rae

RAE’S PANEL-IN-A-BOX: An ROV is a robot submarine.

Its camera sends pictures up a cable.

A computer pins each picture to a map spot.

Scientists compare maps to spot coral changes.

Funny caveat: it cannot spot sandwich temptation.

TRY IT: Draw your room using squares for big things.

The Job Board

Job title: Marine Biologist’s Assistant

Who hired us: Dr. Marina Bello, Bright Reef Marine Station

Rules of the job: Wear life vests, never touch coral, keep the ROV cable untangled, and log each reef zone.

What went wrong: Glitch chased Jay’s sandwich and the ROV cable looped on itself.

How we fixed it: Rae used her new waterproof tether reel while Tray tracked the route and Jay guarded the controls.

What we got paid: $24, added to the Crew Bank for a new total of $220.
